Why optimize your CSS at all? In a nutshell: for faster loading pages. Because, really, anything that can speed up the loading of your site is a good thing. Here, my favorite four tools for CSS optimization and compression:
A free online service, and what a service it is: this tool, based on CSS Tidy, also helps you with CSS shorthand, in case you haven’t got it memorized yet. A worthy bookmark.
CSS Drive’s CSS Compressor does just that: compresses your CSS in either Light, Normal or Super Compact modes. I personally prefer their Advanced Tool (also free), which allows you to get specific (e.g. whether or not to leave spaces between selectors and properties, etc.)
This one not only verifies your CSS with the W3C, it also tests your color contrast. Which, if you read my last post, is pretty awesome.
Finally, because redundancy is just not cool, especially when you’re trying to optimize your CSS, this nifty little tool is quick, easy to use, and simple to understand.
How do you optimize your CSS code?

Nowadays, it is more or less the norm to use JavaScript to insert video content embedded in Flash into web pages. While it does work in the majority of cases, there are a couple of problems: it requires JavaScript and it requires Flash.
Some people block JavaScript, some block Flash, some block both, and some use platforms or user agents that do not support JavaScript and/or Flash. Like the iPhone and iPod Touch, for example. So to reach the largest possible number of people with your videos, you may want to look into the method described by Kroc Camen in Video for Everybody!.

Hi, My name is Rubens Scarelli, a.k.a. Rusc. I'm an illustrator and graphic designer from Brazil. I'm 44 years old and my background is in advertising, but I drew as a child and my first job was to design a comic book for Nestlé in Brazil in 1987, when I was 21. I had just left the family business, a small clothing industry in Sao Paulo. The agency hired me specifically for this project, but I ended up staying for a few years.
I liked the comics and later went to create my own. It was all very magical at the time and the comics were a great foundation for me to develop my side as the designer.

My name is Jaime Jasso I'm from Guadalajara Mexico and I'm the Lead Matte Painter at Blur studio in Los Angeles, California. Since I was kid, I was always fascinated by sci-fi and art, starting in comic books and traditional painting techniques such as oil, pencil, air brush, inks, and later found out that the computer was the ultimate tool. I tried it and of course fell in love with technology and how quickly you could get results with no stains on the floor or on your clothes.

When you use jQuery’s .animate() function with something like a hover event, those animations will “queue up”. That is, if you hover multiple times, that animation will fire multiple times. The classic method to prevent this is to throw in a .stop() before the animation, but I find this abrupt and not ideal, because it prevents the animation from completing a full cycle. In this screencast we’ll look at a few attempts at solving this and ultimately using a plugin that does a great job.
This week was kind of a test… Now that I feature the latest screencast on the homepage I thought maybe I wouldn’t need to make an actual blog post about it. But in practice, barely anybody saw it and the first person who did commented that they would prefer it was mentioned as a blog post. So… here we are =)
